A Washington roof spends months wet, grows moss under the firs, takes winter storms off the Pacific and the Strait, and on the Sound and the islands, salt air. Here is what an Interlock® aluminum roof does about each.
Rain and moss
West of the Cascades a roof can stay wet from fall into spring. Moss roots between asphalt granules and in cedar, holds water against the roof and lifts the edges as it grows. An Interlock panel is smooth, coated aluminum: nothing for moss to root into and nothing to soak up water. Under big firs and cedars, needles still collect in valleys and gutters, so we talk through upkeep at the consultation.
Salt air
On Puget Sound, Hood Canal, the islands, the Strait of Juan de Fuca and the Pacific coast, salt air corrodes steel fasteners, flashings and coated-steel roofing at every cut edge and scratch. Aluminum cannot rust. It forms its own thin oxide layer, which re-forms if the surface is scratched.
Wind
Winter storms off the Pacific and down the Strait hit exposed shoreline and hilltop roofs hardest, working at loose tabs, lifted shakes and exposed screw heads. Interlock panels lock to each other on all four sides with the fasteners concealed. Wind resistance is warranted to 120 mph installed to manufacturer specification.
Snow
In the Cascade foothills, from North Bend and Enumclaw to the upper Stillaguamish and Skagit valleys, wet snow sits on a roof. Interlock panels weigh roughly 0.4 to 0.7 lb per square foot depending on profile, a fraction of natural slate or concrete tile. Smooth aluminum lets snow slide, so we plan snow guards over entries and walkways at the quote. Ice damming is excluded from the material warranty; we look at attic insulation and ventilation with you.
Wildfire
East of the Cascades, in the Gorge and wherever a home backs onto forest, wind-blown embers are a leading way wildfire reaches a house. Aluminum does not burn, and Interlock offers Class A Fire Rated Available, as a complete assembly. Ask about it at your consultation.
Summer sun
The Alunar® finish uses pigments that reflect much of the sun's near-infrared energy: solar reflectance from 0.25 to 0.55 depending on color and thermal emittance of 0.84. Interlock roofs can cut cooling-energy use by up to 25% compared with conventional dark roofing; actual savings vary. The Alunar® finish is warranted for 30 years.

Why this system, in Washington
Asphalt in Washington
A long wet season, shade from the firs and summer sun work on asphalt shingles every year: moss lifts the tabs, granules wash into the gutters and edges curl. Cedar shakes take on water and split. An Interlock roof has no granules to lose and nothing for moss to root into, and its panels lock to each other on all four sides.

Moss has nothing to root into on an Interlock roof. It grows in the gaps between asphalt granules and in the grain of cedar, where water stays; an Interlock panel is smooth, coated aluminum that absorbs nothing. Under big trees, needles and leaves can still gather in valleys and gutters, and we talk through that upkeep at the consultation.
Sometimes. A single layer of asphalt can be roofed over only if an inspection finds it suitable; cedar shingles and shakes, concrete tile and natural slate always come off first. We check at the estimate and tell you which applies to your roof.
The manufacturer's Guardian Lifetime Limited Material Warranty covers the material and finish for the original purchaser for as long as they own the home, and it can be transferred once; the second owner is covered to 50 years from substantial completion. Workmanship is not part of that warranty; the installation is covered by our 10 Year Limited Labor Warranty, for ten years from the Substantial Completion Date.
